Indians look to build on recent success over Tigers
May 31, 2007 - 2:32 PM Detroit (30-22) at Cleveland (32-19) 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - While many people could see this edition of the Cleveland Indians were a good team, not many expected them to be able to go into Detroit last weekend and sweep the defending American League champions.
The Indians host the opener of a four-game set against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday at Jacobs Field.
Since starting the season 7-7, Cleveland is 25-12, including a three-game sweep completed last Sunday. Despite losing two of three to the Boston Red Sox, the Indians did not lose any of their 2 1/2-game lead over the Tigers, who dropped two of three to Tampa Bay.
C.C. Sabathia (7-1, 3.54 ERA) looks to continue his personal success against the Tigers. He faced Detroit on Saturday, picking up the win in a seven-inning outing, allowing three runs and six hits in winning his second straight decision.
Sabathia has allowed more than three runs only twice in his 11 starts this year. The lefthander owns an 11-7 record and 4.03 ERA in 21 starts against the Tigers.
Justin Verlander (5-1, 2.71 ERA) will look to win his fifth straight decision after receiving no decision in his duel with Sabathia on Saturday. He left with a one-run lead after six innings, but the Tigers' bullpen failed to come through in the 6-3 loss.
The righthander is 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA in five career starts against Cleveland.
