Mets aim to get offense back on track, help Hernandez

May 31, 2007 - 2:51 PM San Francisco (25-26) at NY Mets (33-18) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Coming out their first shutout loss of the season, the New York Mets will try to score some runs for a pitcher they haven't been helping lately.

In the rubber match of a three-game set, the Mets face Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

On the mound will be Orlando Hernandez (2-1, 2.13 ERA), who made his first start in over a month Friday and leads the Mets starters in ERA. However, the Mets have not scored a run for him in each of his last two outings.

The righthander pitched six scoreless frames, allowing just two hits, but did not factor in a 6-2 win over Florida. He is 0-1 in his only career appearance against the Giants, yielding five runs over six innings last June.

The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (2-4, 3.23), who allowed two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 5-3 loss to Colorado on Friday. He made his only career appearance against the Mets on May 8, surrendering four runs and a season-high 10 hits in seven innings of a 4-1 defeat.

San Francisco is just 2-8 this season when Cain starts.

Bonds still needs 10 homers to break Hank Aaron's all-time record. He has hit just one homer in his last 17 games.
