Brewers hope to recapture early season magic
May 31, 2007 - 2:55 PM Florida (26-27) at Milwaukee (29-24) 8:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Three weeks ago, the compliments were flying and the Milwaukee Brewers were living large for the first time in years with the best record in baseball. Then they hit the wall.
The Brewers will kick off a four-game series Thursday against the Florida Marlins, hoping to get back on track.
Milwaukee has fallen on hard times after a 24-10 start, losing 14 of its last 19 games. It has lost six straight series after winning 10 of its first 11.
The Brewers send Claudio Vargas (3-1, 4.01 ERA), to the mound, hoping he can snap the slide. In his last outing, a 6-3 loss to San Diego, the righthander allowed four runs and a season-high 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Vargas is 3-3 with a 3.54 ERA in 10 appearances - including seven starts - against the Marlins.
Florida counters with Wes Obermueller (1-3, 5.28), who will be making his first career start against the Brewers. He pitched for Milwaukee from 2003-2005.
On Saturday, the righthander surrendered a season-high seven runs and eight hits in four innings of a 7-2 loss to the New York Mets, his third straight setback.
Florida has won 10 of its last 15 overall and is coming off a road sweep of the Chicago Cubs. It has not been at .500 since May 4.
