Burnett, Vazquez square off in Toronto
Jun 1, 2007 - 1:19 PM Chi White Sox (24-25) at Toronto (25-28) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - The Toronto Blue Jays host the Chicago White Sox on Friday, hoping to build upon the emotional lift their ace gave them on Thursday.
Roy Halladay made his triumphant return to the mound at Rogers Center on Thursday, tossing seven scoreless innings in his first start since having an emergency appendectomy just three weeks ago.
Halladay's return should provide a much-needed boost for the underachieving Blue Jays - winners of just 12 of 28 contests in May.
Toronto will send No. 2 starter A.J. Burnett (5-4, 4.06 ERA) to the mound on Friday. The 30-year-old righthander had a string of three straight wins snapped in his last outing, when he allowed four runs - three earned - in eight innings to take the loss at Minnesota.
Three of Burnett's four losses this season have come against American League Central opponents, with a loss May 1 at Cleveland joining Sunday's loss at Minnesota and his first start of the season at Detroit.
Against the Indians, Burnett allowed seven runs in five innings. Against the Tigers, he lasted a season low two innings, surrendering six runs.
The White Sox will counter with Javier Vazquez (2-3, 4.50). The veteran righthander is in the midst of a seven-start winless streak during which he owns a 5.28 ERA.
Vazquez has never fared well against Toronto, owning a 3-4 mark with a 5.35 ERA in 10 career starts.
