Webb hopes to lead Diamondbacks to eighth straight win
Jun 1, 2007 - 3:14 PM Arizona (32-23) at NY Mets (34-18) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- While pitching has contributed to their recent success, the Arizona Diamondbacks' offense has been scorching.
The Diamondbacks look for their eighth straight win when they start a three-game weekend series with the New York Mets on Friday at Shea Stadium.
Arizona, which is trying to win eight consecutive contests for the first time since a 12-game run from June 18-30, 2003, has benefited from an offense that has scored five or more runs in six of the seven games in the streak.
Diamondbacks starter Brandon Webb (4-3, 3.74 ERA) will look for that kind of continued run support as well as try to continue the stellar pitching the Arizona staff put together during the run.
The ace righthander has led a staff which has recorded a 1.65 ERA during the winning streak. In his last outing, the former Cy Young Award winner went seven innings, allowing two runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in a 5-4 win over Houston on Saturday.
However, Webb is 1-6 in eight lifetime starts against the Mets despite a 2.59 ERA in those outings.
John Maine (6-2, 2.79), whose ERA ranks seventh in the NL, takes the mound for New York. In Saturday's 7-2 win over Florida, he yielded two runs and four hits with eight strikeouts - tying a season high - over six frames.
The righthander won his only career start against Arizona, lasting six innings and allowing one run with seven strikeouts.
