There's always fireworks at Red Sox-Yankees
Jun 2, 2007 - 1:53 PM NY Yankees (23-29) at Boston (36-17), 3:55 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- A seemingly harmless 9-5 drubbing Friday turned into a heated exchange as Scott Proctor hummed a fastball under the chin of Kevin Youkilis. The benches cleared, but no punches were thrown.
Hopefully the tempers will have cooled by Saturday, when the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees in the second game of their three-game set.
All in all, five batters were hit by pitches in Friday's contest, including a fastball from Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang that left Mike Lowell with a left hand contusion and forced him out of the game.
Curt Schilling - never one to shy away from a battle - will take the mound for the Red Sox on Saturday. The veteran righthander is coming off his finest performance of the season, when he held the Cleveland Indians one run in seven innings while striking out 10 and not issuing a walk.
Schilling (5-2, 3.68 ERA) has been hit hard by New York in two starts this season. He has allowed 11 runs - 10 earned - in 13 innings against the Yankees, picking up the loss on May 23 and not factoring in the decision on April 20.
The Yankees will counter with their own veteran righthander Mike Mussina. The 38-year-old had his worst start of the season against Boston on May 22.
Mussina allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings to take the loss.
He might have a stronger offense to work with this time though, as Bobby Abreu, Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera are all showing signs of breaking out of their season-long slumps. Each had two hits in Friday's game.
With Friday's win the Yankees pulled to within 12 1/2 games of the front-running Red Sox.
