Padres seek seventh straight winning series

Jun 3, 2007 - 12:41 PM San Diego (32-23) at Washington (23-33) 1:35 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres will try to capture their seventh consecutive winning series when they meet the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

David Wells (2-3, 4.74 ERA) takes the ball for the Padres in the finale of their three-game series. The lefthander allowed two runs and eight hits in five innings in a 4-1 loss at Pittsburgh in his last outing on Tuesday.

However, the 44-year-old Wells has won his last five matchups against the Washington-Montreal franchise, posting a 5-3 mark in nine starts in the series.

Rob Bowen drove in a career-high four runs and rookie Paul McAnulty added three RBI as San Diego won for the third time in four game with an 11-3 victory Saturday.

Washington's Jason Simontacchi (2-3, 5.28) hopes to put his last start out of his mind. The righthander was pounded for season highs of six runs and 11 hits in 6 1/3 frames of a 10-0 thrashing at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

Simontacchi should be able to get back on track as he boasts a 3-0 record in five career appearances, including two starts, with 3.00 ERA.

Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young saw his franchise record eight straight hits come to an end in Saturday's setback. He is 10-for-12 with five RBI over his last three contests.
