Delgado, Mets look to take series from Diamondbacks

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- New York Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado appears to be regaining his power stroke.

The Mets hope the slugger's recent stretch of success will continue when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Though his overall batting average is just .230, Delgado has connected for five home runs in his last seven games. After hitting 38 home runs a year ago in his first season with New York, Delgado had just three longballs through May 25.

Both Delgado and Ruben Gotay homered as the Mets snapped the Diamondbacks' eight-game winning streak with a 7-1 win on Saturday.

Oliver Perez (6-3, 2.69 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets, who are looking to take the rubber-game of the series. The Mets have won each of Perez's last four starts and the lefthander is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA over 30 innings in that span.

Arizona starter Doug Davis (3-6, 3.27) had his best start of the season on Memorial Day, allowing one run in eight innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. Reliever Jose Valverde nearly gave the game away by allowing three runs in the ninth, but Davis eventually earned the win in a 5-4 victory.

Eric Byrnes hit his club-leading ninth homer in Saturday's loss and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
