Royals having success away from home
Jun 3, 2007 - 1:09 PM Kansas City (21-35) at Tampa Bay (22-31), 1:40 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals look to continue their recent run of success on the road when they visit the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday.
The Royals entered this four-game series in Tampa Bay with seven consecutive losses, in which they scored 13 runs and batted .186. In two games at Tampa Bay, the Royals are unbeaten with 13 runs and are batting .297. Saturday's 9-4 victory here was the eighth win in 10 road games for the Royals, who have played their best baseball away from Kauffman Stadium where they are a league-worst 9-21.
Kansas City starter Scott Elarton (1-1, 7.65 ERA) has not been able to pitch deep into games over his first four starts this season - his longest outing is 5 1/3 innings. The 6-7 righthander is coming off his worst start of the year as he allowed seven runs in five innings during the Royals 9-1 loss against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.
J.P. Howell makes his season debut for Tampa Bay against the team he used to pitch for. The lefthander, a former first-round pick of the Devil Rays, went 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA over 15 starts for the Royals in 2005. In eight starts with Tampa Bay last season, Howell was 1-3 with a 5.10 ERA.
Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford is two hits away from Aubrey Huff's all-time club record of 870. The 25-year-old is already the team's all-time leader in triples, stolen bases and runs.
