Yankees look to build off series win over Red Sox

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees hope to this past weekend was the start of better things.

Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees will try to build of their recent success in the opener of a four-game series against the slumping Chicago White Sox on Monday.

New York comes in riding the momentum of a thrilling 6-5 victory over the arch-rival Boston Red Sox on Sunday as Rodriguez delivered the game-winning homer in the ninth inning off closer Jonathan Papelbon.

It was Rodriguez's league-leading 20th blast of the season, sealing a three-game series win of the Red Sox.

"The chance of hitting an 0-2 pitch off Jonathan Papelbon for a home run are (very small)," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "I'm just glad it happened for us. He kept fighting and finally we were able to prevail at that point."

The Yankees will start rookie Matt DeSalvo (1-2, 5.40 ERA), who was called up to replaced the scratched Roger Clemens. DeSalvo returns to U.S. Cellular, where he gave up four runs and six hits in just 3 1/3 innings of a 4-1 defeat on May 17.

In his last major league outing last Monday, the righthander allowed three runs and five hits in 4 2/3 frames during a 7-2 setback to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jon Garland (3-3, 3.91) take the ball for Chicago, which is just 3-7 in games in which the righthander has pitched in this season. He was tagged for six runs in six innings but did not figure into the decision of a 7-6 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday.

The 6-6 righthander is 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA in seven lifetime starts against the Yankees. However, Garland yielded one run over seven innings for a 4-1 win here on May 17.
