Santana leads Mets against Strasburg, Nationals
Apr 11, 2012 - 2:40 PM (Sports Network) - Southpaw Johan Santana makes his second start since elbow surgery when the New York Mets close out a three-game series today with the visiting Washington Nationals at Citi Field. The former Minnesota Twins ace, who won 16, 13 and 11 games in his first three seasons with the Mets, was out for the entire season in 2011 before returning to face Atlanta on April 5.
He got a no-decision against the Braves in a 1-0 Mets win after allowing two hits in five scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Santana is 6-2 in nine career starts against the Nationals.
Washington was a 6-2 winner in Tuesday's game two of the series when Jayson Werth went 4-for-5 with two RBI.
It was New York's first loss after four straight wins.
Ian Desmond started the game with a home run, while Wilson Ramos added two hits, drove in a run and scored another behind Ross Detwiler.
Detwiler (1-0), who beat out John Lannan for the final spot in Washington's starting rotation, earned the win with five innings of two-hit shutout ball.
Dillon Gee (0-1), coming off a team-high 13 wins last season, was tagged for four runs - three earned - on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
The Mets were without starting third baseman David Wright, who was sidelined because of a fractured finger suffered during Monday's win.
Washington righty Stephen Strasburg, after coming off elbow surgery, also makes his second start of 2012 after a no-decision in an April 5 outing.
He allowed five hits and a run in seven innings of Washington's 2-1, walking a batter and striking out five.
Strasburg has made one career start - a no-decision - against the Mets and allowed two runs on four hits in five innings.
Washington was 10-8 against the Mets last season.
