Phillies' offense erupts late to down Mets

Apr 16, 2012 - 3:08 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Laynce Nix doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, as the Philadelphia Phillies' offense erupted late in an 8-2 win over the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon.

Ty Wigginton preceded Nix's double with a game-tying sacrifice fly and added a three-run double as part of a five-run eighth inning that featured a critical defensive miscue.

Jimmy Rollins and Hunter Pence each had two hits, an RBI and scored twice for the Phillies, who had totaled just 20 runs in their first eight games of the season.

A two-run homer by New York's Ike Davis was among the six hits allowed by Cole Hamels (1-1). The left-hander recorded 10 strikeouts over seven innings.

"Cole is the whole reason we won today's game," said Wigginton. "Anytime you get a pitcher out there battling like that and doing everything possible to win the game you want to help them out, and fortunately we got to win the game in the end."

Mike Pelfrey limited the Phillies to a run on eight hits in six frames.

The Mets were seeking their first series sweep in Philadelphia since June 13-15, 2006.

Ramon Ramirez (1-1) replaced Pelfrey to begin the seventh and gave up back-to- back one-out singles to Rollins and Pence. Ramirez then uncorked a wild pitch that proved costly when Rollins scored on Wigginton's fly ball to right field. Nix followed with an opposite-field double that was nearly caught by left fielder Scott Hairston in the corner.

Pete Orr doubled off Manny Acosta to begin the eighth for Philadelphia. After pinch-hitter Jim Thome struck out swinging, Placido Polanco reached on a throwing error by shortstop Ruben Tejada, and consecutive two-out walks to Rollins and Pence forced in a run.

Miguel Batista inherited a bases-loaded situation and Wigginton cleared them with a double to left field before scoring on John Mayberry's roller along the first-base line that stayed fair.

New York loaded the bases against Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth, but the former Red Sox closer fanned pinch-hitter Justin Turner to end the game.

"You have got to get outs when they are available and you can't walk guys," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "You can't put yourselves in big holes and that's what happened today."

For the third straight day the Mets hit a first-inning home run. Hamels struck out the first two batters, but David Wright hit a bloop single and Davis, who entered the series finale batting .071 (2-for-28) this year, sent the first pitch he saw to the right field seats.

The Phillies got on the board when Juan Pierre, Shane Victorino and Rollins opened the bottom of the first with three consecutive singles. Pelfrey escaped a bases-loaded jam later in the frame by getting Carlos Ruiz on a ground ball to first.

Game Notes

Hamels picked up his first home win since July 22, 2011. He had lost each of his previous four starts at Citizens Bank Park...Hamels recorded the 19th double-digit strikeout game of his career...Pierre collected three hits...Victorino has hit safely in 14 straight games against the Mets.
