Bumgarner, Giants stifle Phillies

Apr 18, 2012 - 6:48 AM San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Madison Bumgarner pitched six-plus innings and the San Francisco Giants topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2, in the second contest of a three-game set at AT&T Park.

Bumgarner (2-1), who signed a five-year extension with the Giants on Monday, gave up just two runs and scattered seven hits while fanning a pair and issuing just one walk.

Nate Schierholtz had three hits and an RBI, Buster Posey had three hits, while Melky Cabrera, Pablo Sandoval, and Brandon Crawford all added an RBI for San Francisco, which snapped a brief two-game slide.

"I'm just trying to stay through the ball and get the barrel on it," said Posey. "I feel like I have two strikes every at-bat right now and it's just one of those things where I'm up there battling."

Hunter Pence cracked a solo homer and Carlos Ruiz knocked in a run for the Phillies, who had a two-game winning streak halted.

Joe Blanton (1-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on 11 hits over five innings.

Both teams struggled offensively, as the Giants went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10, while the Phillies were 1-for-11 with men in scoring position and left eight on base.

San Francisco jumped out front with a pair of runs in its first at bat. Angel Pagan led off the frame with a single up the middle and Cabrera followed by ripping a triple down the line in right to score Pagan. Cabrera then crossed the plate on a groundout by Sandoval.

Pence pulled the Phils within one in the fourth after he led off the inning with a towering homer to left-center field.

The Giants, though, added two more runs in the fifth to make it a 4-1 game. Sandoval began the inning with a double and Posey followed with a broken-bat single into center to put two men on. After Aubrey Huff popped out, Schierholtz came through with an RBI single to right. Posey then stole third and scored on a fielder's choice by Crawford.

Jimmy Rollins singled to center field to start the Philadelphia sixth and came home on a sacrifice fly by Ruiz to make it 4-2, but Clay Hensley, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla shut down the Phils out of the San Francisco bullpen the rest of the way.

"The first inning kind of hurt us, although we did have some good chances," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We would like to have better at-bats."
