Indians hope to avoid third straight loss
Jun 5, 2007 - 2:03 PM Kansas City (21-37) at Cleveland (34-21) 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - If the Cleveland Indians want to avoid an extended losing streak they must continue to score runs for C.C. Sabathia.
Sabathia looks for his major league-leading ninth victory as the Indians host the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
Cleveland split a four-game series with Detroit to remain 2 1/2 games atop the American League Central Division. However, the Indians dropped the final two games of the series.
The Indians send Sabathia (8-1, 3.78 ERA) to the mound. Sabathia is looking to tie Los Angeles Angels pitcher John Lackey as the only nine-game winners in the majors. The lefthander allowed five runs and 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings for an 11-5 win over Detroit last Thursday.
The 6-7, 290-pound Sabathia, who is 11-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 23 career starts vs. the Royals has recently gotten tremendous run support from his teammates. Cleveland has scored six or more runs of support in six of Sabathia's last eight starts.
Kansas City, which has lost nine of 11, puts its hopes in lefthander Jorge De La Rosa (4-5, 4.97). The 26-year old from Monterrey, Mexico has been tagged for 14 runs in back-to-back losses, including surrendering a season-high nine runs over 4 1/3 innings vs. Cleveland on May 24.
Despite winning its last two games at Jacobs Field, the Indians still have lost 11 of 13 here.
Kansas City has won two straight here, but have lost 11 of 13 overall at Jacobs Field.
