Dodgers ace Schmidt set to return vs. rival Padres

Jun 5, 2007 - 3:15 PM LA Dodgers (34-23) at San Diego (33-23) 10:05 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Jason Schmidt will face a stern test in his first start in more than a month when he takes the mound on Tuesday.

Schmidt (1-2, 7.36 ERA) has the unenviable task of cooling off the San Diego Padres as the Los Angeles Dodgers visit their National League West Division rival in the opener of a three-game set.

The righthander is making his first start since April 15 after being sidelined with inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

Schmidt, who threw six shutout innings in his final rehab start, will face a Padres team that has scored 18 runs in its last two games.

Meanwhile, Schmidt will also have another obstacle in his way to helping the Dodgers to their 10th win in 13 games.

He will be opposed by righthander Chris Young (6-3, 2.42), who is 4-1 with a 1.13 ERA in his last six starts. In his last start, Young threw seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits in a 9-0 win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
