Angels down Orioles, 6-3
Apr 21, 2012 - 5:56 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Howie Kendrick went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs to carry the Angels over the Orioles, 6-3, in the opener of a three-game series.Jerome Williams (1-1) did not survive the third inning in his season debut on Sunday, but rebounded with 6 2/3 quality innings on Friday. The right- hander was charged with three runs on seven hits and helped snap Los Angeles' three- game slide.
Brian Matusz (0-3) lost his 12th straight decision dating back to last June, as he was roughed up for six runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and three walks in five-plus innings. Matusz's defense wasn't much help, committing four errors as Baltimore fell to 5-3 on its current 10-game road trip.
"Brian was better. He left a couple of pitches up in the first inning, but then he settled in," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of his starter.
Nolan Reimold went 3-for-5 and cranked a two-run homer to left-center to chase Williams in the seventh and cut the Orioles' deficit to 6-3.
LaTroy Hawkins recorded the final out of the seventh, Scott Downs shook off a leadoff walk in his scoreless eighth, and Jordan Walden worked around a free pass to open the ninth to post his first save. The Angels were 0-for-3 in save opportunities coming in.
"The biggest thing is we got the win," Kendrick said. "Jerome did a great job putting up zeroes, and we came through with the bats."
Torii Hunter and Mark Trumbo had run-scoring doubles in the first inning, the latter coming on a blooper to left that was misplayed by Reimold.
The Angels made it 3-0 in the second when Kendrick's single plated Alberto Callaspo, who reached on Robert Andino's two-out throwing error.
The Orioles got on the board in their next at-bat as Reimold doubled and scored on J.J. Hardy's base hit.
Kendrick came up with the bases loaded in the sixth and added the key insurance runs by clearing the bags with a one-hopper to the wall in right- center. Chris Iannetta and Callaspo both scored easily and Hunter came in on Adam Jones' errant relay throw.
Game Notes
