Offense shines as Diamondbacks top Phils

John McDonald matched Kubel with three hits and knocked in a run for Arizona, which snapped a five-game losing streak with Sunday's 6-4 win over Atlanta.
The game was supposed to feature a pitching matchup between Arizona's Daniel Hudson and Philadelphia left-hander Cliff Lee. However, both starters were placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. Hudson has a right shoulder impingement and Lee a strained left oblique.
Wade Miley (2-0) took Hudson's place, while Kyle Kendrick (0-1) started for the Phillies.
"He got ahead in the count a lot of the times," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson about Miley. "He was hitting his spots tonight. He did a good job for us when we needed him to."
Miley gave up two doubles, walked one and struck out a career-high seven batters over six scoreless innings.
Conversely, Kendrick was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits in three-plus frames.
"I always want to throw as long as I can so I don't have to hurt the bullpen," said Kendrick. "I didn't do a very good job of that tonight."
Ahead by nine runs, Arizona manager Kirk Gibson summoned Joe Paterson from the bullpen to record the game's final three outs. Paterson faced five batters and failed to retire any of them.
Laynce Nix doubled home Placido Polanco to spoil the shutout bid and Ty Wigginton reached on an infield single. Shane Victorino then hit a three-run homer and Carlos Ruiz followed with a solo shot.
Craig Breslow replaced the ineffective Paterson, whose earned run average went from 20.25 to 37.13, and promptly gave up an infield single to John Mayberry. But Breslow induced a double-play grounder from rookie Freddy Galvis and retired Pete Orr on a 4-3 grounder to end the game.
With the loss, the Phillies (7-10) fell three games below .500 for the first time since they were 17-20 on May 13, 2007.
The Diamondbacks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the home first. Leadoff batter Gerardo Parra was credited with a double that caromed off the glove of left fielder Juan Pierre. Aaron Hill followed with a line drive down the left-field line that was overturned from a home run to an RBI double. Hill stole third and scored on Upton's sacrifice fly.
Kendrick then hit Miguel Montero, who came home on a double by Kubel. A two- out single by McDonald plated Kubel.
Ransom hit a two-run double in the second before Upton led off the fourth with his first home run of the season, a blast to left field. Two batters later, Kubel homered to right field off David Herndon to make it 8-0.
Parra added a sac fly in the seventh.
