Byrd goes for fifth straigth win as Indians face Royals

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Paul Byrd attempts to do something he has done only once in his 12-year career.

Byrd and the Cleveland Indians look to win the second of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

Byrd (6-1, 3.57 ERA) has won four straight starts and can tie a career high with his fifth consecutive victory. The 36-year-old also won five straight starts from July 25-August 16, 2001, when he pitched for the Royals.

The righthander allowed two runs and nine hits in six innings in an 8-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox last Wednesday. He has not walked a batter in six consecutive stars, a span of 43 innings.

Kansas City trots out Brian Bannister (1-3, 3.89), who will try to win his second consecutive start. The righthander limited the Devil Rays to one run and two hits while striking out a career-high six in eight innings in a 2-1 win on Thursday.

The last team in the American League Central, the Royals have lost 10 of their last 12 games, including a 1-0 setback on Tuesday behind a five-hit shutout by the Indians' C.C. Sabathia.
