Diamondbacks go for 11th win in 12 games
Jun 6, 2007 - 3:45 PM San Francisco (27-30) at Arizona (35-24) 9:40 pm EDTPHOENIX (Ticker) -- Last season, all the Arizona Diamondbacks had to brag about on the pitching staff was Brandon Webb. Lately though, everybody they send to mound is shutting down the opposition.
The Diamondbacks continue their three-game series with their division rival, the San Francisco Giants, on Wednesday at Chase Field.
During a streak that has seen Arizona win 10 of 11 contests, the Diamondbacks rotation has allowed just 15 earned runs. It has been more enough for the offense, as they have outscored the opposition, 69-36, since since starting the stretch on May 24.
Arizona is 4-0 at home against the Giants, with each game being decided by one run.
Looking to keep the recent surge going, the Diamondbacks will send Webb (5-3, 3.39 ERA) to the mound. The ace won his second straight start with a 5-1 victory over the Mets on Friday, yielding an unearned run and four hits over eight frames with eight strikeouts.
The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, who has struck out at least seven in each of this last three outings, has pitched at least six innings in 11 consecutive starts. He is 7-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 16 career starts against the Giants.
Matt Morris (6-2, 2.66) will take the hill for the Giants, who have dropped eight of their last 11 contests. He has been the most consistent starter for San Francisco, lasting at least six innings in all but one of his 11 starts, allowing three runs or less in all but one outing.
However, the one outing where he did surrender more than three runs and failed to make it at least six innings was against the Diamondbacks, against whom he owns a 4-4 record and a 3.90 ERA in nine career starts. On Friday, the righthander surrendered just one hit over six frames in a 13-0 blowout victory over the Phillies.
