A 2008 draft pick who debuted with 20 appearances - 15 starts - in 2011, Lyles was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take the slot of fellow righty Kyle Weiland, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sore shoulder.
Lyles was 4-0 with a 3.46 earned run average in 26 innings in the minors, striking out 24 batters.
He was 2-8 with the Astros last season while pitching 94 innings, allowing 107 hits and striking out 67 batters.
Lyles faced the Reds twice, including one start, and allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings of work.
The Reds counter Lyles with 6-foot-6 righty Mat Latos, who picked up his initial win in a Cincinnati uniform in his most recent start.
The 24-year-old, acquired in an offseason deal that sent Edinson Volquez to San Diego, had gone 0-2 in three starts with the Reds before throwing seven innings of scoreless four-hit ball in Cincinnati's 9-2 win over San Francisco.
In 15 1/3 previous innings, he'd given up 21 hits and 14 runs.
Latos is 3-1 in four career starts against Houston with a 2.30 ERA in 27 1/3 innings, walking four batters and striking out 25.
On Saturday, Johnny Cueto tossed seven scoreless innings and Jay Bruce knocked in four runs as the Reds rolled to a 6-0 win.
Cueto (3-0) allowed just five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Bruce finished with two hits, including a two-run homer, and Brandon Phillips added an RBI triple and two runs scored for the Reds, who snapped a two-game skid.
Lucas Harrell (1-2) surrendered six runs - five earned - on nine hits and a walk over his six-inning start. Travis Buck had two of the Astros' six hits as they fell for the third time in five games.
Cincinnati was 9-6 against the Astros last season.
