Maddux aims to continue string of team's strong starts
Jun 6, 2007 - 3:47 PM LA Dodgers (34-24) at San Diego (34-23) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux has participated in one of the San Diego Padres' major league-leading nine shutouts. He wouldn't mind being part of his second one against the team he pitched for late last season.
The Padres continue their three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday at PETCO Park.
Maddux (4-3, 3.92 ERA), who was traded to the Dodgers at the trade deadline last season, signed a one-year, $10 million contract in the offseason to pitch for the Padres. The 41-year-old is looking to win his fifth straight start at PETCO, the spacious park where San Diego has shut out the opposition seven times.
The four-time National League Cy Young Award winner is 14-7 with a 2.75 ERA in 32 career starts against the Dodgers. On Thursday, he yielded two runs - one earned - and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings, but did not receive a decision in the Padres' 4-2, 11-inning win over Pittsburgh.
Randy Wolf (7-3, 3.68), who will try to win his fifth straight decision, takes the mound for the Dodgers, winners of nine of their last 13 contests. He allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings on Friday in a 5-4 victory over the Pirates.
The lefthander is 5-2 with a 5.63 ERA in eight career starts against San Diego.
