Diamondbacks eye a series win at Marlins Park

Apr 30, 2012 - 2:36 PM (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks shoot for a series win over the host Miami Marlins this afternoon in the finale of a four-game series.

The Diamondbacks have won two of the first three games in this set and are coming off Sunday's 8-4 victory behind Jason Kubel's three hits and three runs batted in. Cody Ransom knocked in a pair of runs, while Willie Bloomquist and Gerardo Parra both had two hits and an RBI.

Kubel spoke of how the D'Backs were able to get to Miami ace Josh Johnson.

"We made him throw a lot of pitches," Kubel said. "We just chipped away at him. He's got some good stuff so the more pitches we can see, [the more we] can make him work, then we have a good chance of him not go deep."

Wade Miley improved to 3-0 for Arizona and allowed just one hit and one unearned run with six K's over 6 1/3 innings.

Taking the hill for the Diamondbacks Monday will be rookie left-hander Patrick Corbin. A former draft pick of the LA Angels of Anaheim and acquired in the Dan Haren trade, Corbin will get the call from Double-A Mobile, where he went 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts.

Corbin is starting in place of Josh Collmenter.

"It's a very exciting time whenever you're making your Major League debut. It's what you dream about, it's what you work hard for," D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson said on the club's website. "It's what you earn, you earn the opportunity."

The Diamondbacks will resume their 10-game road trip with six more games against the Nationals and Mets.

Miami hopes to earn a split of this series with Arizona and watched Johnson get pounded for five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings on Sunday. The righty struck out eight batters and issued two walks.

"This is the first game [that] we didn't have a chance. Every game we've been playing, we've had a chance," said Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen. "This game was kind of different."

Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run of the season, a three-run blast in the ninth, and drove in all four runs for the Marlins, who have dropped seven of their last eight games.

First-year Marlin Mark Buehrle will try to right the ship when he takes the mound Monday. The left-hander is just 1-3 with a 2.63 earned run average in four starts and was last in action during a 5-1 loss to the Mets last Wednesday at Citi Field.

Buehrle tossed seven decent innings and permitted two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. He won his first start at home on April 18 versus the Cubs and has never faced Arizona in his career.

The Marlins will open a nine-game road swing tomorrow in San Francisco and is slated to visit San Diego and Houston on the trip.

Arizona won five of seven meetings with the Marlins a season ago.
