Milwaukee ended a three-game slide and salvaged the finale of a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals thanks to a 3-2 win on Sunday. Zack Greinke threw six innings of one-run ball and John Axford later notched his fifth save with a scoreless ninth.
Jonathan Lucroy had two hits and drove in a pair of runs during a three-run top of the sixth inning. Aramis Ramirez also had an RBI for the Brewers.
"I knew he was probably going to try to pitch around me a little bit with a lefty on deck, and I was just looking for a ball up in the zone that I could really drive," Lucroy said of facing Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia in the decisive sixth frame. "He left one up there for me, and I just tried to hit the ball hard, and it ended up working out."
The Brewers, who are slated to visit San Francisco for three games, will turn to veteran lefty Randy Wolf tonight and he is 1-2 with a 7.17 earned run average in four starts. Wolf came out on top the last time out in a 9-6 win over Houston on Tuesday, as he allowed two runs and four hits in six innings.
Wolf, a left-hander, had four strikeouts and four walks. He has made 15 career starts against the Padres, going 6-5 with a 5.51 ERA.
Meanwhile, the Padres will kick off a nine-game homestand versus the Brewers, Marlins and Rockies tonight, and have lost two straight and four of six games.
San Diego dropped a 4-1 decision to the Giants on Sunday and starter Clayton Richard was hit up for four runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings. Chris Denorfia provided the offense with two hits and an RBI for the Padres.
"It's frustrating. It's sad. We're trying to put everything together but we can't," Padres first baseman Jesus Guzman told the team's website.
Joe Wieland will take the ball for the Friars tonight and he is 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA in his first three starts of his career. The young right-hander last pitched in a 7-2 loss to Washington on Wednesday and was reached for two runs and five hits in six innings.
Wieland is 0-2 with a 2.25 ERA at home and will face the Brewers for the first time.
San Diego lost three of five meetings with Milwaukee last season.
