With Jose Valverde (2-1) on the mound, Alejandro De Aza led off with a single and Alexei Ramirez followed with a sac bunt that moved De Aza, who had stolen second, to third base. Dunn then crushed a 1-0 fastball over the wall in right.
Hector Santiago got the first out of the home ninth, but then walked Jhonny Peralta. After Andy Dirks flied out, Ryan Raburn doubled to put the tying run 90 feet away from the plate.
Addison Reed then took the mound and struck out Austin Jackson to end the game for his first career save.
Paul Konerko hit a solo home run while Gavin Floyd gave up just two runs on seven hits over seven innings and struck out six for the White Sox, who snapped a three-game slide. Nate Jones (1-0) pitched a flawless eighth inning for the first win of his career.
"We needed to win this game today," said Dunn. "Gavin pitched great and kept us in the game the whole time. It's nice that we were able to get the runs and pull it out."
Austin Jackson and Dirks each drove in a run for the Tigers, who have dropped two of their last three. Max Scherzer lasted seven innings in the start and was touched for just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts.
"He was terrific out there today," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland about Scherzer. "That's the Scherzer we need and that's the Scherzer we're capable of getting every night."
In the second, consecutive singles from Alex Avila and Peralta were followed by a single from Dirks to score one. Jackson singled later in the inning for a 2-0 lead.
Konerko hit his sixth home run of the season in the seventh to cut Chicago's deficit in half.
