Nolasco hopes to match team wins mark in San Diego

(Sports Network) - Ricky Nolasco tries to match Dontrelle Willis' franchise record for wins this afternoon when the Miami Marlins conclude a three-game set with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Nolasco pulled within one of Willis' team record of 68 on Tuesday in San Francisco, as he held the Giants to a run and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to improve to 3-0, while lowering his earned run average to 2.76.

A California native, Nolasco is 7-2 with a 2.55 ERA while pitching in the Golden State, including a 3-1 record at Petco Park. However, he's only 3-3 overall versus the Padres with a 5.62 ERA.

"I don't know what it is. I don't know," Nolasco said on pitching in his home state. "I've been pitching well on the West Coast. I hope to do what I'm doing. I'm trying to work as quickly as possible, get quick outs and go deep into games."

Nolasco will be trying to match a terrific effort from Mark Buehrle on Saturday, as the left-hander tossed his first complete game as a Marlin and the 28th of his career, lifting Miami to a 4-1 win.

Buehrle (2-4) allowed a run on five hits and two walks. He threw 77 of his 116 pitches for strikes.

"Today was big ... It was huge for everyone because now we have one more day without using people," said Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen of Buehrle's outing, which helped the bullpen after the 12-inning victory against San Diego on Friday.

Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Marlins, who have won five straight, but are still one game under .500 at 13-14.

Clayton Richard (1-4) fanned seven and gave up three runs on nine hits and a walk for San Diego, which has dropped five of its last seven.

"He's a good one...He's a very accomplished Major League left-handed pitcher," said San Diego manager Bud Black of Buehrle.

Today, San Diego will hand the ball to 22-year-old righty Joe Wieland, who is still searching for his first big league win. Wieland fell to 0-4 on Monday against Milwaukee, as he allowed five runs (three earned) and five hits in five innings to raise his ERA to 4.91.

This will be his first-ever appearance against the Marlins.

Miami had lost five in a row in San Diego before this series.
