Pence hits game-winning HR in 10th, Phils take another from Astros

May 15, 2012 - 9:50 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Hunter Pence's second home run of the game, a line-shot to left in the bottom of the 10th inning, sent Philadelphia over Houston by a 4-3 count to sweep a two-game series.

Pence won the game off former Phils hurler Brett Myers (0-1), who began the frame by retiring Shane Victorino on a foul out to third. But Myers hung a slider and Pence got enough to muscle it over the left-field wall.

"I was pulling for him. I was happy for him. Two home runs and three hits is a big offensive day," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel of Pence.

It made a winner of Jake Diekman (1-0), who tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in his major-league debut. Starter Cliff Lee did not earn a decision despite scattering five hits and one run over eight innings, fanning a season- high 10 batters.

Brian Schneider hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, who put together their first three-game win streak of the season.

Matt Downs notched a solo homer for the Astros, losers of four straight.

Recalled prior to the game from Triple-A Oklahoma City, Jordan Lyles allowed six hits and three runs -- all but one unearned -- over six full frames.

"The guys came back and battled well," said Astros manager Brad Mills. "Lyles threw the ball extremely well. He did a great job coming up here for this."

Lee's shutout was spoiled on Downs' leadoff homer to left in the seventh. Though he allowed Jason Castro to reach on a third-strike wild pitch in the eighth, Marwin Gonzalez followed by grounding into a double play, and Jose Altuve flied out.

The Astros tied the game in the ninth. Against Chad Qualls, Jordan Schafer struck a pinch-hit double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Carlos Lee single. Pinch-runner Brian Bogusevic stole second, then scored on a J.D. Martinez base hit compounded by Hunter Pence's bobble on the attempted throw home.

"We do a lot of things that hurt us that don't show up in the boxscore," Manuel said. "We've got to play better and be more consistent. We have to stop making mental mistakes."

Diekman was called on after Castro's double left two in scoring position and fanned Gonzalez swinging to keep it 3-3. The 25-year-old lefty retired the side in order in the top of the 10th.

In the home second, John Mayberry reached on an error and Schneider's line- drive homer to right made it 2-0.

Houston dodged a bullet in the fourth, as Mayberry singled, Freddy Galvis walked then Mayberry was thrown out trying to score on a two-out hit from Schneider.

Pence's one-out solo homer to right in the sixth extended Philly's edge to 3-0.

Game Notes

The Phillies have won six of the last eight meetings with the Astros...This is the longest win streak for Philadelphia since a four-gamer to end the 2011 season from September 25-28...To make room for Lyles, Houston optioned pitcher David Carpenter to OKC...Pence notched his eighth career multi-homer game...Qualls was charged with four hits and two runs while recording two outs...Manuel was ejected in the top of the eighth for arguing the Castro wild pitch.
