A's, Giants rekindle Bay Bridge series

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Chad Gaudin never won more than four games in any one of his four major league seasons prior to this one. On Friday, he goes for his fifth straight win against the opponent he defeated to start the streak.

Gaudin and the Oakland Athletics kick off a three-game set with their interleague rival across the Bay Bridge, the San Francisco Giants, at SBC Park on Friday.

In part to fill the void left by the departure of Barry Zito to the Giants, Gaudin (6-1, 2.41 ERA), has pitched brilliantly in his first year as a full-time starter. He trails only teammate Dan Haren in ERA in the American League.

The righthander surrendered two runs and eight hits with five walks over five frames on Sunday as the Athletics downed the Twins, 4-2.

One day after watching 40-year-old Curt Schilling hold Oakland to one hit, 22-year-old rookie Tim Lincecum (2-0, 4.05) hopes to turn a similar trick. He will make his first appearance against the A's.

Lincecum is coming off his second consecutive poor outing against the Phillies, as he yielded six runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in a 9-8 defeat on Sunday. In two starts against Philadelphia, he is 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA. In his other four starts, he is 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA.
