Red Sox beat Lee, Phils to win series

May 20, 2012 - 11:07 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jarrod Saltalamacchia belted a three-run homer, Josh Beckett pitched effectively over 7 2/3 innings and the Boston Red Sox posted a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series at Citizens Bank Park.

Mike Aviles homered, singled and drove in the other two runs for Boston, which has won eight of its last 10 games.

Beckett (4-4) held the Phillies to a run on seven hits and two walks to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season.

Cliff Lee (0-2) surrendered five runs and nine hits in seven frames for the Phillies, who had their six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday.

Beckett carried a shutout into the eighth before allowing a sacrifice fly to Juan Pierre. He was then replaced by Vicente Padilla after Shane Victorino worked a two-out walk.

Padilla got Ty Wigginton on a 4-3 grounder to end the inning after walking Hunter Pence to load the bases.

"We couldn't get any runs or big hits to drive them in," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Aviles drove in Boston's first two runs. He led off the game with a homer for the second straight day and slapped a two-out single in the second.

"Trying to get on base. I'm fortunate enough to get the ball out of the park early and set the tone," Aviles said.

Saltalamacchia crushed a home run to deep center field off Lee to give the Red Sox a 5-0 lead in the third. Adrian Gonzalez singled and Will Middlebrooks doubled in front of the Boston catcher.
