Mauer set to return to Twins lineup vs. Nationals
Jun 8, 2007 - 3:04 PM Washington (24-36) at Minnesota (29-29) 8:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Twins embark once again on their favorite time of the season - interleague play.
The Twins, who posted a major league-best 16-2 interleague mark last season, host the Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.
The chances of their interleague success continuing just got better. Minnesota, which took two of three from Milwaukee in its first interleague series of the season, will receive a boost when reigning American League batting champion Joe Mauer returns to the lineup for the first time since May 4.
Mauer has missed 30 games due to a strained quadriceps muscle, and the Twins have struggled to score runs without him. Minnesota averaged just 2.8 runs during its recent six-game road trip.
But the Twins snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Wednesday.
Carlos Silva (3-6, 3.86 ERA) will take the mound looking for just his second win in his last six starts. He was a tough-luck loser in his last outing, holding Oakland to one run and five hits over eight innings on Saturday.
Silva will be opposed by Jason Simontacchi (2-4, 5.61), who allowed six runs - four earned - in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday in a loss to San Diego.
Washington lost two of three to Baltimore in its first interleague series of the season and has lost six of its last nine games.
