Sosa takes mound looking to stop Mets' skid
Jun 8, 2007 - 3:20 PM NY Mets (35-23) at Detroit (34-25) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The New York Mets are in an unfamiliar position.
The Mets will attempt to snap a season-high four-game losing streak when travel to the Detroit Tigers to open a three-game interleague series on Friday.
Jorge Sosa (5-1, 3.22 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets, who were coming off being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in a 6-3 loss on Thursday.
New York is now in danger of dropping five in a row since September 5-10, 2005.
Sosa has been pitching well lately, allowing a run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings to pick up his second straight win in a 7-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.
However, it will be up to the offense to snap the losing streak. The Mets are averaging just two runs in their last four games and have a banged-up outfield, as Moises Alou (quadriceps) remains on the disabled list with Shawn Green (foot) and Endy Chavez (hamstring).
In contrast to the Mets, the Tigers are red-hot, having won four of five and scoring nine runs or more runs in five of their last six games.
Detroit will send Chad Durbin (5-1, 4.75) to the hill. The 29-year-old is in search of his career-high sixth straight win.
In his last start, Durbin allowed five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, but was able to win 9-5 against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.
The Tigers have given Durbin plenty of run support, scoring an average of six runs in his last eight starts.
