A's hope to avoid Yanks' brooms

(Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics will attempt to avoid a sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees this afternoon when they send Tommy Milone to the mound in the three-game finale at the Coliseum.

The 25-year old left-hander came to the Athletics in the offseason deal that sent Gio Gonzalez to Washington, and he has responded to his new surroundings with six wins in his first nine starts and an ERA of 3.75.

Milone has won three of his last four games, including a dazzling seven inning effort in a 2-1 win over the Angles last Monday where he allowed just five hits, one walk, and one earned run. The southpaw has now pitched at least seven innings in three straight and five of his first nine starts.

Milone has been lights-out at home as well, winning all four of his starts there with a microscopic ERA of 0.60.

"(I have) a tremendous amount of confidence right now." Milone said. "It's easy when you have such a big park with a lot of foul territory. I feel like when I'm here, I'm not afraid to pitch to contact."

The Yankees will respond with Hiroki Kuroda, and though he was a reliable starter for four seasons as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the beginning of his career in pinstripes has not been very kind.

Kuroda has a lackluster 3-6 record, which includes back-to-back losses where he's allowed 10 earned runs over 10 1/3 innings, bringing his season ERA to 4.56.

The right-hander lost his only other career start against the A's, allowing five earned runs back on June 17, 2009.

The Yankees won the series on Saturday afternoon by defeating Oakland 9-2.

After homering in Friday's win, Teixeira followed up with a monster effort, going 4-for-5 with two more long balls, upping his total to eight on the year.

"I'm glad I'm seeing some results," Teixeira said, who also knocked in a career-high five RBI. "(I'm) just being real aggressive with my swings and trying to let it go, which I've done my whole career."

Robinson Cano went 3-for-5 and homered in his second straight game. Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher, and Eric Chavez also had multi-hit games for New York.

C.C. Sabathia (6-2) halted his skid of two consecutive losses with a seven inning, two earned run, four strikeout effort.

Bartolo Colon (4-5) was saddled with the loss for the A's, giving up nine hits and six earned runs over six innings of work.

Collin Cowgill registered his first three-hit game of the year, while Josh Reddick belted his 13th home run of the season.
