Volquez hopes to break through for Padres against D-Backs

Jun 2, 2012 - 1:42 PM (Sports Network) - The Padres have given starter Edinson Volquez almost zero help over his current three-game losing streak, but the right-hander didn't do himself very many favors last time out.

Volquez hopes to find the win column this evening as San Diego continues a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Padres have scored only one run in Volquez's past three outings since his last win on May 12, getting shut out in each of his last two trips to the hill. With little room for error, Volquez gave up two runs in the first inning of a 2-0 setback to the Mets on Sunday, yielding five hits with three walks and two wild pitches over the outing.

"I was a little bit all over in the first inning. Then I fixed my mechanics and came back and pitched better," said the right-handed Volquez, who is 2-5 with a 3.46 earned run average in 11 starts this season.

Volquez's second start with the Padres after being acquired in the offseason was against the Diamondbacks and he did not get a decision in a 4-2 loss despite giving up just two runs over seven innings with a still season-high eight strikeouts.

Daniel Hudson will make his fifth start of the season and second since returning from a right shoulder injury for the Diamondbacks this evening.

In his first outing since April 18, the 25-year-old lasted five innings versus the Brewers on Sunday and did not get a decision in a 4-3 victory. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while working his way back into game shape.

"Overall I felt good. I kind of lost command there towards the end, but we got the win so that's the important part," said Hudson.

Hudson is 1-1 with a 5.48 ERA this season and in five meetings with the Padres is 4-1 with a 1.72 ERA.

San Diego's bats have shown some life over the past few games as they plated at least six runs for the third time in four games in last night's opener. This time it resulted in a 7-1 win and snapped the Padres' six-game losing streak.

Jesus Guzman followed Alexi Amarista's bunt single with a two-run homer that ignited a six-run eighth inning. It was Guzman's first homer of the season and helped get hosting San Diego on track following a 1-9 road trip.

"[Guzman] was due to do something big," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "We saw it a lot last year."

Cameron Maybin had two hits, including an RBI triple, and Carlos Quentin also drove in a run in the eighth inning, making him 8-for-16 with three homers and seven RBI in four games since missing San Diego's first 49 games while recovering from right knee surgery.

Paul Goldschmidt and Willie Bloomquist each had a pair of hits for Arizona, which lost for the third time in four games. Goldschmidt is hitting .429 over a career-high 10-game hitting streak.

Wade Miley (6-2) gave up four runs on six hits with no walks through 7 1/3 innings to take the loss.

"Things happened quick there in the eighth," said Bloomquist.

The Diamondbacks have won 12 of their past 18 against the Padres, also taking two of three at San Diego from April 10-12.
