RHP Owings takes mound looking to stop two-game skid

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rookie Micah Owings will have a tough task in trying to help the Arizona Diamondbacks avoid their first three-game losing streak in over a month.

Owings (4-1, 3.86 ERA) takes the mound against the Boston Red Sox in the second game of their three-game interleague series on Saturday.

Owings has not pitched in more than a week and will face one of the more potent lineups in baseball. The righthander, who was skipped in the rotations due to Arizona having a few days off, allowed one run and seven hits in five innings in an 11-5 win over Philadelphia.

Arizona, which has won 11 of 14, has not lost three straight since May 1-5, when they dropped five straight.

Meanwhile, Julian Tavarez (3-4, 5.33) takes the mound for the Red Sox as they look for their second straight win after dropping a season-high four straight. In his last start Tavarez allowed three runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings but did not receive a decision in a 4-3 loss to Oakland on Monday.

Boston won the series opener behind two three-run homers from J.D. Drew and eight innings from Josh Beckett, who became the first Red Sox pitcher to go 9-0 since Roger Clemens did so in 1986.
