Weaver hopes to turn back the clock against the Padres
Jun 9, 2007 - 3:36 PM Seattle (31-26) at San Diego (36-24) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- After finding his groove in the postseason for the St. Louis Cardinals last season and a big payday in the offseason, Jeff Weaver has been unable to get anything to go his way as a Seattle Mariner.
The Mariners continue their three-game interleague series with the San Diego Padres on Saturday at the Petco Park.
Jeff Weaver (0-6, 14.32 ERA), who has spent nearly a month on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis, has struggled since signing a one-year deal in the offseason reportedly worth more than $8 million.
After recording the win in the series-clinching Game Five of the World Series last season, he has failed to last more than six frames in any of his six starts, allowing six or more runs in five of them.
In his last start on May 10 - a 7-3 loss to Detroit - the righthander allowed six runs and 10 hits over five innings. He is 3-4 with a 3.64 ERA in nine career regular-season starts against the Padres.
San Diego will send the 44-year-old David Wells (3-3, 4.79) to the mound as he makes his first interleague start of the season against the last American League team he faced as a member of the Red Sox before being dealt to the Padres last August.
On Sunday, the 21-year-veteran lefthander gave up three runs and five hits over five frames in a 7-3 win over the Nationals. Wells is 11-11 with a 4.47 ERA and a save in 43 games - 28 starts - in his career against the Mariners.
