Oakland puts Colon to the test vs. Texas
Jun 6, 2012 - 2:55 PMVideo
Colon pitched well on Friday in Kansas City, but lost for the fourth time in five starts and fifth time in six decisions. He gave up two first inning runs, but the A's were shut out 2-0 and Colon fell to 4-6 on the year to go along with a 4.34 earned run average.
"It was terrific to do what he did after two runs and looking like he really didn't have his best stuff," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He got behind some guys and doesn't do that pretty much ever. And then to be able to do what he did for as long as he did, a veteran like him doesn't let a couple runs early on fluster him. He just goes out there and pitches his game."
Colon is 17-6 lifetime versus the Rangers with a 3.77 ERA in 27 starts.
Getting the call for the Rangers tonight will be righty Colby Lewis, who is 4-4 with a 3.50 ERA. Lewis was charged with the loss on Friday in Anaheim, as he allowed four runs (2 earned) and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
"Colby threw the ball well," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.
Lewis has faced the A's 18 times (16 starts) and is 7-3 against them with a 3.23 ERA.
After nearly getting no-hit by Jarrod Parker in Monday's opener, the Rangers bounced back on Tuesday, as Ian Kinsler had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored to lead Texas to a 6-3 win.
Derek Holland (5-4) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks through 5 1/3 innings to earn the win for Texas, which has won two of its last three games on the heels of a four-game losing streak.
"It's my job to make sure to go out there as long as I possibly could despite being a little fatigued," said Holland, who was recovering from a stomach virus.
Joe Nathan tossed a scoreless ninth to record his 12th save of the year.
Travis Blackley (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Collin Cowgill hit a two-run homer while Yoenis Cespedes added a solo shot for the Athletics, who lost for the 11th time in their last 13 games.
Oakland split a two-game set with Texas earlier in the year.
