Marquis makes Padres debut in capper with Giants
Jun 7, 2012 - 2:40 PMVideo
Marquis, a former first-round pick with 333 major-league appearances and 106 wins, began the season with the Minnesota Twins and made seven starts - going 2-4 with an 8.47 earned run average - before he was let go on May 28.
He signed a minor-league deal with the Padres a day later and made one start at Double-A San Antonio in the Texas League before the call-up to the majors.
The 33-year-old began his career with Atlanta in 2000 and has since pitched for St. Louis, the Chicago Cubs, Colorado, Washington, Arizona and the Twins, reaching double-digit wins six times - including career-bests of 15 with the Cardinals in 2004 and the Rockies in 2009.
He was a combined 8-6 last season with the Nationals and Diamondbacks and is 5-4 in 13 career meetings with the Giants.
In Wednesday's second game, Gregor Blanco homered among his two hits and scored twice as San Francisco edged San Diego, 6-5.
Melky Cabrera also collected a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Giants, who shook off a loss in Tuesday's opener and won for the eighth time in their last 10.
Madison Bumgarner (7-4) worked six innings, picking up the win despite allowing seven hits and four runs with four walks. Sergio Romo recorded the final three outs to earn his third save.
"I didn't really have great command of anything today, it seemed like," Bumgarner said. "I came out of there lucky today."
Chase Headley knocked in a pair of runs and Cameron Maybin homered for the Padres, who have dropped nine of 11.
Clayton Richard (2-7) lasted 5 2/3 frames, charged in defeat for 10 hits and six runs - four earned.
San Francisco starts righty Matt Cain, who's won five straight starts since opening the season with one win in his first five outings.
He went eight innings and was a 2-1 winner over the Cubs in Chicago in his most recent start on June 2 after giving up a run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Overall in 11 starts, he's allowed just 23 earned runs in 79 innings - a 2.62 earned run average - and has held opposition batters to a .206 average, 20 points below his career mark of .226.
Cain is just 5-11 in 28 career starts against the Padres.
The Padres are just 5-14 in the past 19 meetings between the teams.
