Winning Jones: O's down Phils on 12th-inning HR

Jun 10, 2012 - 1:36 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Adam Jones' two-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Orioles a 6-4 win over the Phillies in the second edition of a three-game series at Camden Yards.

Jones hit an 0-1 slider from B.J. Rosenberg (0-1) over the left-center field fence, scoring Chris Davis who worked a leadoff walk.

"[Baltimore manager Buck Showalter] hits me fourth for a reason," Jones said. "Glad I was able to come through for my team."

The blast made a winner of Luis Ayala (2-1), who pitched a scoreless top of the 12th after allowing a leadoff single to Hector Luna.

Davis, Matt Wieters and Ryan Flaherty knocked in a run apiece for the Orioles, who dropped the opener on Friday.

O's starter Tommy Hunter allowed three runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings.

Jimmy Rollins, Jim Thome and Hector Luna hit solo home runs for the Phillies, who have lost seven of eight.

Vance Worley, despite pitching to a no-decision, was solid in his second start since coming off the disabled list. He allowed three runs -- one earned -- and five hits in six innings, striking out five and only walking one.

The Phillies got on the board with one down in the third as Rollins deposited a Hunter offering over the wall above the scoreboard in right.

The Orioles tied the game in the bottom half, taking advantage of poor Phillies fielding. After Robert Andino led off the inning with a base hit, Mike Fontenot misplayed a hard-hit ball off the bat of Endy Chavez. After a J.J. Hardy fly ball advanced the runners, Andino scored on a Davis groundout.

Thome gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead with a leadoff, opposite-field home run to left in the fourth, but the lead did not stand for long.

Rollins misplayed a one-out ground ball, allowing Nick Johnson to reach base. Wilson Betemit then hit a dribbler to the mound. Worley attempted to throw out Johnson at second base, but bounced the throw and second-base umpire Fieldin Culbreth ruled that Rollins was unable to hold the bag while picking the low throw despite replays that suggested otherwise.

"We could have shut them out," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We made some mistakes and it cost us. That's how they scored the three runs. One of those three runs was earned but a mistake definitely hurt us."

Flaherty followed with an RBI single and another run scored on Fontenot's misplay of a Chavez hit, giving the Orioles a 3-2 lead.

After Luna tied the game with a homer in the fifth, Baltimore took another lead in the seventh inning. Hardy worked a one-out walk before Davis singled on a shallow pop up to right, which Fontenot was unable to catch over his shoulder. Wieters took advantage of the misplay, finding open ground in right field to plate Hardy for a 4-3 contest.

Juan Pierre started an eighth-inning rally for the visitors with a one-out single. With Pierre running, Hunter Pence singled through the hole on the left side, advancing Pierre to third. Thome then sent a single up the middle to tie the score at 4-4.
