Padres hope for rare road win streak against Mariners

Jun 13, 2012 - 2:48 PM (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres try to string together two straight road wins for the first time in nearly nine months this evening when they continue a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

San Diego got the best of Felix Hernandez in Tuesday's opener, as it used a four-run sixth inning and held on for dear life in a 5-4 win.

Everth Cabrera capped the sixth with an RBI triple, giving San Diego a 5-1 lead, but Seattle scored three times in the ninth, getting a solo homer from Michael Saunders and an RBI single from Munenori Kawasaki.

Huston Street allowed Kawasaki to cross the plate on a wild pitch, making it 5-4, before retiring Jesus Montero end the game.

Clayton Richard (3-7) earned his first road win of the season, scattering eight hits and giving up one run over seven frames. He walked one and struck out three.

Cameron Maybin and Nick Hundley hit consecutive RBI singles in the sixth. Maybin then scored on a wild pitch by Felix Hernandez (4-5) and Cabrera's triple plated Hundley.

"That was big tonight to see that from those guys," said Padres manager Bud Black. "Maybin, Hundley, Cabrera all came through in our four-run inning which was critical."

Chase Headley had an RBI single in the third inning for the Padres, who had dropped 15 of 19 coming in. A win tonight, though, would give them two straight wins away from home for the first time since a three-game sweep at Colorado from Sept. 19-21.

It would also give them their first winning streak anywhere since May 19-20, when they beat Nationals in Washington before flying home to beat the Dodgers.

Getting the call for the Padres tonight will be righty Jason Marquis, who will be making his second start for San Diego.

Signed to a minor league contract May 29 after being released by Minnesota three days earlier, Marquis lost his Padres debut against San Francisco on Thursday, as he allowed four runs (2 earned) and nine hits in six innings.

"I made a few mistakes, but for the most part I settled in and got in a groove and feel a lot better now than I did a month ago," Marquis said. "I'm gonna keep working to get better and get more comfortable out on the mound."

Regardless, he has now lost five straight starts overall.

Marquis lost to the Mariners back on May 5 and is 1-1 in five starts against them with a 1.95 ERA.

Seattle will counter with righty Hector Noesi, who is 2-6 with a 5.99 ERA. Noesi did not get a decision on Wednesday in Anaheim, but was awful, as he allowed six runs and four hits with five walks in only four innings. He also surrendered six runs in 4 1/3 innings in his previous outing.

Noesi has never faced the Padres.

Seattle won five of six from the Padres a year ago.
