Floyd's White Sox meet Westbrook's Cardinals in series finale
Jun 14, 2012 - 2:56 PMVideo
Since throwing 7 2/3 scoreless frames to beat the Royals on May 11, Floyd is 1-3 with a 10.52 earned run average, allowing 30 runs and 10 homers over 25 2/3 frames. After giving up four homers in a no-decision versus Seattle on June 2, the long ball again plagued the righty on Friday versus the Astros.
Floyd allowed just four hits in an 8-3 setback, but two were home runs and he was charged with four runs over six innings with nine strikeouts.
"When you fall behind, you give a guy the ability to sit on it and go after a fastball. His location needs to be better when they are in hitter's counts," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said about Floyd.
The 29-year-old Floyd is 4-6 with a 5.38 ERA in 12 starts this season and is 0-3 with a 4.85 ERA in four on the road.
Floyd has faced the Cardinals just once before and beat them with seven innings of one-run, three-hit ball without a walk. That outing came on April 9, 2005 while with the Phillies.
Westbrook, meanwhile, has lost each of his past three starts and has pitched to a 7.62 ERA while going 0-4 in his last five outings. He faced his former Indians club on Friday and yielded four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and a walk over six innings while striking out seven.
The 34-year-old righty, who is 4-6 with a 4.25 ERA in 12 starts this season, hasn't beat the White Sox since Aug. 7, 2007 in Chicago. He is 0-5 in eight starts against them since.
The Cardinals drew even in this three-game series with last night's 1-0 triumph that featured 7 1/3 scoreless innings from Lance Lynn in his 10th victory of the season. He scattered three hits and struck out a career-high 12 batters.
"Every inning I go out I think its zero to zero," said Lynn. "I just want to execute my pitches to the best of my ability and give the guys behind me a chance to win."
Carlos Beltran provided the only offense of the night with a two-out homer in the third for the defending World Series champs, who had lost three of four coming in.
Jake Peavy pitched well in defeat, allowing just a run on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Alejandro De Aza went 2-for-4 for the White Sox, who had their eight-game road winning streak halted.
"You hate to go out there and be almost good enough and feel good and not get it done," said Peavy. "Losing is losing to me and I don't care how it happens, it never feels good."
Adam Dunn was scratched from the lineup on Wednesday after spraining his ankle on a home-run swing in Tuesday's victory. He is day-to-day and did pinch-hit in Wednesday's loss.
St. Louis hasn't played the White Sox since it was swept by them back in 2006. This is the first meeting between the teams in St. Louis since the Cardinals broke the brooms out in 2001.
