Padres' Bass tries to lure team to victory over A's

Jun 15, 2012 - 2:55 PM (Sports Network) - Anthony Bass will try to extend the Padres' longest winning streak of the season to four straight this evening when San Diego starts up a three-game set with the Oakland Athletics.

Bass, though, is winless in his past five starts, going 0-2 with a 7.00 earned run average over that time. He hasn't made it past the sixth inning in each of his previous four appearances, including Sunday's loss at the Brewers.

The right-hander was charged with four runs on five hits and three walks over 5 2/3 frames, falling to 2-6 with a 4.38 ERA in 14 games this year, including 12 starts.

Bass, 24, has never faced the A's and got a no-decision in his previous interleague start against the Angels on May 20. He threw six innings of two- run ball in that one.

The Padres open up the last leg of a nine-game road trip after posting their first sweep both of the season and all-time in Seattle. San Diego picked up a third straight win by taking Thursday's finale 6-2.

Edinson Volquez pitched into the seventh inning to get the win, allowing one run on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames. He picked up his first victory since May 12.

"There is nothing you can do, the only thing you can do is go out there and pitch your game, go deep in the game, give your (team) a chance to win," said Volquez. "Tonight was good, feels good, score six runs, unbelievable."

Chris Denorfia went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while John Baker and Jesus Guzman each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Padres.

The Athletics are also coming off a sweep as they took all three games of their series with the Rockies. Oakland prevailed in Thursday's meeting 8-2 behind an excellent outing from rookie Jarrod Parker, who gave up just three hits over seven innings.

Parker walked just one batter and struck out six, throwing 60 of his 89 pitches for strikes in another strong June outing. The 23-year-old righty took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Texas on June 4.

Josh Reddick homered for the A's, who won all three games after being swept by the Diamondbacks in their last series.

"It was a good series you know," said Oakland manager Bob Melvin. "We tried not to dwell on the previous series coming into this, and we had some good games here."

Brandon Moss enjoyed the series against the Rockies, going 6-for-13 while homering in each game. He logged four home runs total and drove in eight runs.

Travis Blackley will make his seventh appearance and fourth start for Oakland after getting claimed off waivers from the Giants earlier this season.

The 29-year-old southpaw has dropped back-to-back starts, including Sunday in Arizona. He was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and three walks over 4 2/3 frames, giving him an 0-2 mark and 3.98 ERA in his games with Oakland.

Blackley has never faced the Padres.

San Diego lost two of three to Oakland the last time the teams met in 2009.
