Marlins look to continue hold over Devil Rays
Jun 10, 2007 - 1:33 PM Tampa Bay (27-33) at Florida (31-32), 1:05 pm EDTMIAMI (Ticker) -- The interleague rivalry in the "Sunshine State" has been one-sided for the most part.
The Florida Marlins look to improve on their 35-22 record against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays when the teams meet in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.
The Marlins have been especially tough on the Devil Rays here at Dolphin Stadium, where they have won 20 of 28 meetings.
Marlins starter Rick Vanden Hurk (1-1, 8.50 ERA) will be looking to build off his last start on Tuesday. The 6-5 righthander had a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Atlanta Braves and went on to win the first game of his career.
Making his first start since April, the 22-year-old allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four, before giving way to to the Florida bullpen, which preserved the 5-1 win.
Tampa Bay also will send a young arm to the mound in 24-year-old Andy Sonnanstine (0-0, 7.71). In his major-league debut on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, the righthander allowed six runs and eight hits in seven innings.
Despite that, he still stood to win the game as he left with a 10-6 lead. The win eluded Sonnanstine as Toronto rallied for a 12-11 victory with six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning off the bullpen.
The Devil Rays picked up one of their rare wins against the Marlins on Saturday as Carlos Pena and Raul Casanova hit home runs in a 7-2 victory. Pena's home run was the 99th of his major league career.
The Devil Rays could have won Friday's game as well, but squandered an 8-2 lead, allowing 12 unanswered runs in a 14-8 loss.
