Phillies search for more success vs. Rockies
Jun 20, 2012 - 2:51 PM (Sports Network) - A return home was just what the Philadelphia Phillies needed. Tonight, Charlie Manuel's crew tries to make it two straight wins, as they continue a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.Philly returned home on Tuesday after a 3-6 road trip that culminated with a three-game sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. However, Cole Hamels got them back on track with a solid eight-inning effort, while two-run homers by Carlos Ruiz and John Mayberry carried the Phillies to a 7-2 win.
Hamels (10-3) fanned seven and surrendered two runs on six hits and three walks. The 28-year-old lefty came into the contest with a 1-2 mark and a 6.75 ERA this month, while sporting a career 11-16 record in June.
"A lot of Cole Hamels tonight," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "He was really good."
Ruiz recorded two hits and three RBI, while Jimmy Rollins added a pair of hits and three runs scored for the Phillies, who snapped a six-game home losing streak and won just their third home tilt in their last 13 tries.
"It was a solid team effort," Hamels said. "When you go out and give up a run in the first inning, we were able to battle and get the big hits, get the runs. Mayberry came up huge with a big homer. Then having 'Chooch' (Carlos Ruiz) get that big homer, too. That was a good team effort."
Josh Outman (0-3) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings for Colorado, which has dropped 11 of its last 12 games.
Hoping to keep the Phillies in the win column tonight will be righty Joe Blanton, who is coming off his second complete game win of the season. Blanton went the distance to beat the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, holding them to a run and seven hits. He also struck out seven without walking a batter to improve to 6-6, while lowering his ERA to 4.93.
Blanton has faced the Rockies twice and is 1-0 against them with a 5.23 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with righty Alex White, who should be well rested following his shortest outing of the season. White absorbed the loss on Thursday to Oakland, as he allowed four runs (2 earned) and seven hits in just four innings. He also walked four batters, but was removed from the game because of a blister on his right hand.
"Everything's fine," White said. "Tracy was a little bit worried about it, but I'm not sure why they pulled me. I wanted to keep pitching, but things happen, and I can't change it."
White, who has never faced the Phillies, is 2-5 with a 5.56 ERA on the year.
On the injury front the Rockies could get left fielder Carlos Gonzalez back for tonight's contest. Gonzalez has missed the last two games with a strained hamstring.
Gonzalez leads Colorado with a .335 average, 17 home runs, 51 RBI and nine stolen bases.
The Phillies won four of their five meetings with the Rockies last season and are 20-4 against them since the start of the 2008 season.
