Halladay, Glaus lead Blue Jays past Dodgers

Jun 11, 2007 - 1:06 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Roy Halladay pitched seven strong innings and Troy Glaus had two home runs as the Toronto Blue Jays cruised to an 11-5 triumph over the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Halladay (6-3) allowed three runs and five hits with three walks and two strikeouts to remain perfect in two career outings against Los Angeles.

A former Cy Young Award winner, Halladay allowed just one unearned run during a complete-game victory on June 18, 2002, in his first appearance vs. the Dodgers.

"The first inning was a battle but like all the great ones, (Halladay) put it in gear and pitched very well." Toronto Manager John Gibbons said. "He has made a living off damage control, like all the top pitchers in the game, it's tough to knock them out."

With the score tied at 2-2 in the second inning, Halladay helped his own cause with an RBI single to plate John McDonald, giving the Blue Jays the advantage for good.

"Sometimes it helps to not overthink at the plate especially in the middle of the season," McDonald said. "(Halladay) didn't even take swings in batting practice."

Glaus had a run-scoring double and McDonald added an RBI single against Los Angeles starter Jason Schmidt (1-3) as the Blue Jays pushed their lead to 5-2.

"We challenged their defense right away by putting balls in play which created some momentum and we kept it rolling," Blue Jays catcher Sal Fasano said.

The duo struck again two frames later.

Glaus stroked a solo blast to chase Schmidt and McDonald added another RBI base hit off Dodgers reliever Mark Hendrickson, sparking a four-run fifth.

"At times you look to create a spark anyway you can to get the team going," McDonald said.

But Glaus was not done putting his stamp on the game, taking Hendrickson deep to center field for his 10th homer in the sixth as Toronto made it 10-2.

It was Glaus' 13th career blast against the Dodgers. Glaus had not homered in his last 16 games.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first inning when Matt Stairs laced a run-scoring single and scored on an RBI groundout by Aaron Hill.

"Everyone swung it well today, it makes it a lot easier to go out and pitch with runs on the board." Halladay said.

Schmidt was tagged for five runs and nine hits in four innings in his second start since coming off the disabled list with bursitis in his right shoulder.

"(Schmidt) is coming back from six weeks without playing so there is going to be some inconsistency." Dodgers manager Grady Little said.

It was a completely different result for Schmidt from his last outing, when he pitched six scoreless frames but did not figure into the decision against San Diego on Tuesday.

"It's tough, their a good hitting team," Schmidt said. "I tried a little bit of everything, I didn't throw strikes and I didn't put the ball where I wanted."

Luis Gonzalez drove in three runs for the Dodgers, which has lost five of their last six games.
