Volquez helps Padres blank Mariners

Jun 25, 2012 - 4:07 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings on Sunday and the San Diego Padres blanked the Seattle Mariners, 2-0, in the finale of a three-game interleague series at Petco Park.

Volquez (4-7) allowed four hits with three walks and four strikeouts to notch the win. Joe Thatcher got the final out of the seventh, Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless eighth and Huston Street recorded his 10th save of the season with a clean ninth inning.

"It couldn't have gone more perfectly," Street said. "The bullpen pitched well. The first thing (Padres manager Bud Black) Buddy said to me was: 'That one was a good one to get.' I knew he meant that it was for (Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds) Ak." Akerfelds lost his life on Sunday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Alexi Amarista provided the only offense of the day with a two-run, ground- rule double for the Padres, who had lost four of their last five contests entering play on Sunday. Mark Kotsay went 3-for-3 in the triumph.

Hector Noesi (2-9) allowed two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings. He also went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Mariners, who have dropped three of four.

"I thought Hector threw the ball batter today," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "He was more consistent with everything. I was really pleased with his effort."

The Padres plated the only runs of the game in the fourth. Chase Headley drew a leadoff walk before Chris Denorfia and John Baker followed with consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. After Cameron Maybin lined out, Amarista picked up his teammate and roped a ball deep to left that took a hop over the wall for a ground-rule double to plate two runs.

Seattle put together a threat in the fifth when Noesi smacked a two-out base hit and Ichiro Suzuki drew a walk to put two runners on with two down, but Volquez got John Jaso to fly out to center to end the inning.

Pinch-hitter Kyle Seager sliced a double down the left-field line with one out in the Seattle eighth, but nothing came of it, as Justin Smoak lined into a double play to keep the Padres in front.

Street retired Michael Saunders, Dustin Ackley and Chone Figgins in order in the ninth to lock up the victory.

Game Notes

Prior to Sunday's game, the Padres placed pitcher Anthony Bass on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and activated infielder Andy Parrino from the DL...Akerfelds had held the position since 2001...Seattle went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven on base.
