Thome makes return to Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Two seasons ago Jim Thome got injured and Ryan Howard emerged as one of the top power hitters in the game, forcing the Philadelphia Phillies to deal Thome to the Chicago White Sox before the 2006 season.

Thome will make his return to Philadelphia on Monday when the Phillies host the White Sox in the first game of a three-game interleague series.

Thome resurrected his career last season with 42 homers, but has been staggered by injuries again this season, though he is expected to make some starts at first base on Chicago's current road trip.

Adam Eaton (6-4, 5.99 ERA) will be charged with stopping Thome and the White Sox. The 29-year-old righthander has been pitching well of late, going 3-1 in his last four outings, including a win last Wednesday at the New York Mets in which he allowed two runs in six innings.

Eaton owns a 2-3 career mark in six starts against Chicago in the past with a 7.04 ERA.

The White Sox will counter with longtime National Leaguer Javier Vazquez (3-4, 4.13). No stranger to the Phillies, Vazquez owns a 10-6 record with a 4.55 ERA in 22 career starts against the home team.

Philadelphia lost two of three over the weekend to the lowly Kansas City Royals, while the White Sox suffered the same fate against the Houston Astros.
