Bonds looks for 748 against Burnett, Blue Jays
Jun 12, 2007 - 1:15 PM Toronto (30-33) at San Francisco (29-34) 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Barry Bonds broke out of his home run drought Monday night. He'll look to keep the hits coming on Tuesday when the San Francisco Giants continue their interleague series against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.
Bonds had gone 12 games and 41 plate appearances without a homer before Monday's game, but he turned on an 0-1 offering from Josh Towers in his second at-bat and sailed a two-run homer out to deep center for his 747th career blast.
He has one homer in eight career at-bats against Tuesday's starter, A.J. Burnett, to go along with a pair of strikeouts and four walks.
Burnett (5-5, 4.01 ERA) has been blowing hitters away recently, combining for 25 strikeouts in his last 14 1/3 innings over two starts. Those strikeouts have not translated to wins, however, as the 30-year-old righthander has gone 0-2 over his last three outings.
Burnett, who spent the first seven years of his career playing for the National League's Florida Marlins, owns a 5-1 career mark against San Francisco with a 1.62 ERA in six starts.
The Giants will counter with Noah Lowry (5-5, 3.49). The 26-year-old lefthander has surrendered four earned runs in each of his last three starts.
Lowry has faced four of the hitters likely to see action for the Blue Jays on Tuesday, and has held Troy Glaus, Royce Clayton, Jason Phillips and Frank Thomas to a combined 6-for-29 (.207) mark.
San Francisco seeks a second straight win, after it snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory. Bonds' two-run homer supported a complete-game effort by Matt Morris.
