Early MVP candidates take swings in Detroit
Jun 12, 2007 - 1:23 PM Milwaukee (34-29) at Detroit (36-26) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) - Two of the season's best players will be on display when the Milwaukee Brewers open a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
In first place in the National League Central Division, the Brewers have been led by first baseman Prince Fielder, who has belted a league-leading 23 homers. His 51 RBI are just one behind Houston's Carlos Lee for the league lead.
The Tigers have been sparked by veteran Magglio Ordonez, who leads the American League in batting average (.367) and is second in RBI (56).
Jeff Suppan (7-6, 3.92 ERA), who is 8-6 with a 4.63 ERA in 20 regular-season starts against Detroit, will be asked to silence the bats of Ordonez and the majors' highest-scoring offense. In Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, he surrendered five runs - four earned - and seven hits over five frames.
The righthander will square off against Detroit for the first time since he started Game Four of the World Series while with St. Louis.
Justin Verlander (6-2, 3.12), who never has faced Milwaukee, will try to slow down the Brewers, who are second in the majors in homers hit.
The righthander pitched seven strong innings on Wednesday, yielding just five hits in a 10-0 win at Texas. He is 5-1 in his last seven starts.
