Worley shines as Phils down Rockies

Jul 15, 2012 - 5:32 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Vance Worley did it all on Saturday.

The Phillies righty pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a clutch two-run double in an 8-5 win over the Colorado Rockies in the middle test of a three-game series at Coors Field.

"I don't mind hitting here," joked Worley. "I don't enjoy pitching here, it's funky. It's hard to breathe and you really have to make sure you get on top of the ball and direct it otherwise it's not going to do anything."

Worley (5-5) allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. Jonathan Papelbon recorded the final five outs of the game to notch his 19th save of the season.

Carlos Ruiz clubbed a three-run home run and Chase Utley added a pair of RBI singles among his three hits for the Phils, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Juan Pierre went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Shane Victorino contributed two hits, including an RBI triple, in the victory.

Jeremy Guthrie (3-9) absorbed the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Wilin Rosario crushed a three-run home run and Carlos Gonzalez added an RBI double for the Rockies, who had their brief two-game winning streak snapped.

Philadelphia jumped on Guthrie for four runs in the top of the first and never let the lead slip away. Victorino ripped a one-out double into the right- center field gap and scored two batters later courtesy of a single by Utley. Howard followed with a walk and Ruiz smoked a fastball from Guthrie over the wall in right-center for his 14th long ball of the season.

"You look at four runs and just think the world is coming to an end, but it really came down to one big pitch to Ruiz to one of the best hitters in the league right now," admitted Guthrie about his first inning.

Colorado got on the board with a pair of runs in the third. Josh Rutledge walked to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Guthrie. Fowler then drove home the first Rockies run with a single into left and Gonzalez brought home Fowler with a double later in the inning.

Pierre ripped a two-out single in the sixth and stole second before Mike Fontenot was intentionally walked. Worley then slapped a fastball from Rockies pitcher Adam Ottavino the other way to right to bring home Pierre and Fontenot for a 6-2 advantage.

Colorado pulled to within one in the eighth. Tyler Colvin was plunked by Phillies reliever Jake Diekman and Jordan Pacheco walked, which spelled the end of the night for Diekman. Brian Sanches came out of the bullpen and immediately surrendered Rosario's three-run long ball, a towering drive to left-center field.

The Phillies added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI triple by Victorino and a run-scoring base hit by Utley.

Game Notes

Victorino's double in first inning was his first extra-base hit since June 13 against the Minnesota Twins...Prior to Worley's two-hit night, the hurler was 0-for-21 at the plate this season...Philadelphia went 5-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded five, while Colorado was 3-for-8 with men in scoring position and left seven on base..Sunday's probables are Cole Hamels for Philadelphia against Drew Pomeranz for Colorado.
