Padres steal win from Dodgers

Jul 15, 2012 - 5:46 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - The Padres took advantage of Kenley Jansen's mental gaffe in the ninth inning and scored on a steal of home and a throwing error on the same play in an improbable 7-6 victory over Los Angeles to snap a 10-game skid at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers were ahead 6-5 going to the ninth and had two outs with Everth Cabrera at third and Will Venable at second. That's when Jansen (4-3) looked down at the rubber and kicked the dirt a few times before turning his back to the plate and taking a couple of steps toward second base. That was enough time for Cabrera to steal home.

Jansen's throw to the plate was high to A.J. Ellis. Home plate umpire Greg Gibson originally called Cabrera out, but failed to realize Ellis didn't have the ball, which had bounced to the backstop. Jansen was then late covering the plate, giving Venable an opportunity to slide in with the go-ahead run.

"I don't know if he was going to clean his shoes or regrouping," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "It was just a crazy play after that."

Jansen said he was late covering the bag because of the original out call.

"I don't know what happened, but it won't happen again," Jansen said "When I saw Cabrera called out, I froze. Then he was called safe. Everything happened so fast. I'm glad it happened now and not in October. I'll learn from it."

Cabrera knew he had to take a calculated chance to help the Padres finally end their Dodger Stadium losing streak.

"When he turned his back to the plate, I decided to go," Cabrera said. "I cheated a couple of steps down the line and took off when he didn't turn around. Everybody was nervous so I wanted to try something different, and we won the game."

"I didn't know what Cabby was doing," Venable said. "He was halfway home before I left the bag, but I kept along with him. I saw nobody covering home and I just decided to keep going. It was a crazy play."

Alex Hinshaw (1-1) recorded the final two outs in the eighth to get the win and Huston Street retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his 14th save.

The Padres, who had lost four in a row, received homers from Carlos Quentin and Chase Headley.

Andre Ethier belted a two-run shot for the Dodgers, who lost for the fourth time in five contests.

Ethier's blast to right off Brad Brach scored Matt Kemp in the sixth, giving LA a 6-4 lead. Quentin singled in Alexi Amarista in the eighth, and the Padres started the ninth with a Yonder Alonso single. Cabrera came on as a pinch- runner prior to Venable blooping a single to left. Venable stole second before pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay popped out to set the stage for the dramatics with Amarista at the plate.

Ethier singled in a run in the first and third to help LA to a 3-1 lead. The first run scored when Quentin misjudged a short fly ball to left. Padres starter Edinson Volquez walked Juan Rivera with the bases full in the third with nobody out before retiring three straight hitters.

Quentin led off the fourth with a blast over the wall in center, but Adam Kennedy's RBI double in the fifth gave LA a 4-2 lead.

Headley's homer to right with Logan Forsythe aboard tied the game in the sixth.
