Yankees go for eighth straight victory

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees look to extend their season-high, seven-game winning streak on Wednesday as they continue their interleague series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In Tuesday's opener, Yankee right fielder Bobby Abreu continued his recent tear with a three-run homer in the first inning of a 4-1 win. He is batting .488 (20-for-41) during an 11-game hitting streak.

The winning streak is New York's longest since a 10-game stretch from May 7-17, 2005, lifting them to .500 (31-31) for the first time since May 9.

Mike Mussina (2-3, 5.63 ERA) will see if he can push the club over the break-even mark for the first time since it was 8-7 on April 19. He has been unable to capture a win over his last five outings despite allowing two runs or less in two of them.

However, righthander has also struggled during the winless stretch, giving up five runs or more in the other three outings. In his last outing on Thursday, Mussina yielded a run and four hits in six innings of a 10-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Mussina has faced the Diamondbacks just once in his career, giving up six runs in five innings in a loss five seasons ago. He is, however, 19-10 in interleague starts, including 12-6 at home.

Trying to halt the Yankees' winning streak will be Livan Hernandez (5-3, 3.66), who is 0-2 with a 4.12 ERA in three lifetime starts against New York. On Thursday, he allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings in a 5-4, 11-inning loss to San Francisco.
